A Time in Wanchai - Visiting the Chinese Timekeeper's Latest Boutique

First published in ELEQT on 15 April 2012.

Adrien invited Jessie, Jerome, and I over to the Chinese Timekeeper's first physical shop recently opened in Wanchai, and introduced us to Ashley Ng, their new Brand Coordinator, who clued us into the excitement of their latest visit to the Baselworld 2012.

After its first birthday, the Chinese Timekeeper finally found its home just off Queen's Road East and right next to the famous Blue House, the pre-war building that fuses the architectural characteristics of both the Chinese and Western styles. It is situated just down the road of the Royce-Rolls, the Mercedes, as well as the Mini showrooms, so if you are dropping in the 'hood for a test drive, make sure you pass by Adrien's latest shop to check out luxuries of a different kind!

The boutique itself stands out from the neighbouring traditional shops, and yet curiously blends in rather well, mixing traditional Chinese aesthetics with a chic and modern approach. Jessie and I totally loved the mural by Elsa Jean de Dieu, yet another one of their adventure racing buddies, with unique drawings that compliment their quaint Chinese calligraphy paintings, Chinese medicine cabinets, and Chinese wooden furniture on display.

Ashley is a seasoned watch designer, but this year is the first she participated in Baselworld 2012 as an exhibitor, and she found it much different from her prior experience as a visitor. She was surprised by the relationships forged with the fellow exhibitors, and as one of the few Chinese brands in the show, lots of attention were drawn to their second collection. She is constantly amazed by all the positive feedbacks they receive about their designs!

Jessie and I were entirely engrossed by their green jade watch, which shines through the black dial, fusing an entirely unique Chinese factor in the watch-making industry. They also have two styles of watches that follow the traditional Chinese time system and run a 24 hours cycle instead of the conventional 12 hours cycle, with the Chinese time characters engraved on the dial to replace the usual Arabic numbers. Definitely takes a real China hand to tell time with this special one! Jerome, on the other hand, prefers their gold dragon watch, with the stunning 24K gold dragon on the black sunray dial. Paired with black alligator strap, the piece symbolises the traditional Chinese emblem for power and auspiciousness. Certainly makes an awesome gem to celebrate the year of dragon with!
