Hey there, this is Jasmine! After accompanying the fabulous Gil to all these awesome events, I have decided that I need to boost my contributions to her blog. My plan is to write about anything fun, yummy, green or beautiful!
For my first entry, I thought I would review a restaurant I recently hit up in the new-ish Cubus Building in Causeway Bay. Each time I pass by it, I make a mental note to eventually try all the restaurants there. So when I read about Sessyu's one year anniversary special wagyu steak set, I jumped at the chance.
Sessyu is one of the many teppanyaki restaurants in Causeway Bay. The interior is what I guess you would call modern Japanese, with a long teppanyaki bar table on one side, and several regular tables on the other side. They also have a life-size cow figure smack in the middle of the restaurant. In fact, the first thing you see when you walk in is the rear-end of this cow, which I find rather amusing. A giant hint that you should be ordering beef! And after having tried their beef, I would say that is an awesome choice.
So for their anniversary set menu, we kicked off with an assortment of appetizers including smoked chicken salad, baby squid, bamboo shoots, and smoked duck breast with mustard dressing. It was good, but nothing to write home about in my opinion, although I found the salad quite fresh.
Next came the two Kyushu wagyu beef dishes, both of which totally exceeded my expectations. First one was served thinly sliced wrapped around some veggies. The second was a thicker cut sirloin served as cubes of fatty yumminess! Both were melt-in-mouth amazing, but I preferred the thick cut. I was almost glad we didn't opt for the upgrade to the Hide beef! Otherwise it may have been too oily for my taste.
Of course, there is always the fried rice and sautéed veggies dishes that come at the end of a teppanyaki set. At Sessyu, they do a garlic fried rice, which was pretty good, not too heavy. They even top it off with a "rice cracker" the chef makes in front of you.
I also really liked the seaweed in their miso soup, which had a jelly-like texture.
The dinner was finished off with a homemade caramel ice cream slice, crème brûlée style. Perfect way to round off the meal.
This wagyu beef set was truly a steal! They are offering the special set till the end of the month, which is really only a few days away, so do try to make a reservation ASAP. I definitely walked out with a satisfied belly.
Side note: Being a student, I always have a huge bag with me, and it is annoying when I have nowhere to put it at restaurants and I end up having to eat over it. The chairs at Sessyu had a cool design where each one had a cubbie underneath, so you can put your bags under you. Simple yet so effective!
