Bangkok - What to Wear

First Published in Wearever the Weather on 31 March 2011.

Whether it is your first trip to Bangkok, or it is practically your second home, I would suggest bring fewer pieces of clothing because you will be inevitably SHOPPING! Bangkok is definitely a shopping paradise, so it is an amazing place to go with your girlfriends and not your significant other.

I can't count the hours I have spent in Central World or Siam Paragon. I am not a big fan of the heat, but if you like the more local shopping scenes, you should visit the Chatuchak Weekend Market and the Patpong Night Market.

By now you would have probably figured out that I am quite fond of the
Taikoo Place. The abundant amount of cultural activity happening in this commercial complex never cease to amaze me. Other than the perpetual events, they also have a collection of artwork, both locally and internationally sourced, that are permanently displayed within the office buildings. Here are a couple of collections that I quite admire:

Collective Memories - Hong Kong Film Archives

First Published in Hong Kong Fashion Geek on 9 March 2011.

Audrey, Rebecca, and I slowly wandered towards Hong Kong Film Archives after a lavishing tea buffet at East Hotel last week. We were there to watch the movie How to Get a Wife, starring famous local actors Patrick Tse Yin and Patsy Kar Ling.

Audrey and Rebecca are both old movie rookies, but I have always been a diehard fan for Hong Kong movies from the sixties and the seventies, especially ones produced by Cathay Movies. Although it was disappointing to see that they haven't included the Cathay Movies in their latest screenings The Best from the Archive Collection, we went to watch it mainly because the plot sounded interesting, and because Patrick Tse is also more widely known in our generation as the father of singer cum actor Nicholas Tse.

I came to the Hong Kong Film Archives once before and intended to watch a movie spontaneously, but they are very popular with the local neighbourhood and tickets were sold out. In the end, we just checked out the exhibition of the day, The Psychic Labyrinth of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. This time round when the tickets were up for sale, I rushed to the box office immediately to avoid disappointments.

Hey Big Spender - Where to go for Impressive Dates

First Published in Lifestyle Asia on 3 March 2011.

Whether it is a big anniversary with your wife coming up or a first time out with the girl you want to impress, ideas for dates are often a great deal of hassle for boys. This is why the girls and I have been putting our heads together to come up with a few pointers:

Above and Beyond

Peninsula fanatic Keely suggested a hearty meal at Felix. With the stunning view overlooking the Victoria Harbour, it feels like the two of you own the world. They also have a live band in the house, playing jazz and various other love songs to set the mood. Keely suggested getting there before 8pm so that the two of you can catch the Symphony of Lights. Watching it on the top floor of the Peninsula gives the light performance a whole different feel. If you want to add an extra wow factor to your date, why don't you fly her over from HMS Tamar on the helicopter? There aren't many hotels with their own helicopter pad, but Peninsula does.

Passion for Bags - Interview with Wendy Mak, General Manager of Cocomojo

First Published in Sassy Hong Kong on 28 February 2011.

Guest Blogger Gillian shares with us the fascinating world of handbag-making through her interview with Wendy Mak, Founder and General Manager of Cocomojo. Not only does Wendy share with us her valuable tips of how to care for handbags, she has even offered an exceptional discount for us Sassy girls!

How did you first come up with the idea of Cocomojo?

My family has been in the leather business for generations, and my father produces handbags for huge brand names such as Prada, Coach, and Marc Jacobs. He is my guide to the fashion world, as he took me along on his business trips to Europe since I was very young. After I graduated from university, I joined a luxury fashion house as a Buyer. Continuing to tag along my father’s business trips, I met an Italian designer who was trained in France. As French designs are strong with shapes and contours, whereas Italian designs play extensively with fancy details, I asked her why she didn’t mix the two schools of thought together in her designs. After a great laugh, she seriously pondered upon the idea, and this was pretty much how Cocomojo started.

The Obvious Place - Hong Kong Arts Centre

We're excited to introduce our latest Geek addition, hkCultureGeek Gillian Chu, who will bring us the latest arts events and hidden culture scoops around town. You can reach her at hkCultureGeek@hkfashiongeek.com.

I went to the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) on Chinese Valentines' Day to watch the musical Table for Two. My drama buddy, Audrey, was unfortunately detained by Japanese bankers at work, so I was left with two hours on hand to explore HKAC alone.

I usually come to HKAC to watch drama performances, so it has been ages since I last wandered through the building leisurely. I've always knew HKAC has a diverse range to offer, from arts courses to street music, but what I didn't know was the amount of artwork they had displayed in the premises.
